Local authorities respond well to 'suspicious' backpack

The report of a suspicious backpack found at the door of Gogebic Taconite’s office in downtown Hurley Saturday morning caused quite a stir.

The good news is the bomb squad called in from Marathon County, Wis., found nothing explosive in the backpack and no one was hurt, but beyond that, it was, as always, heartening to see the quick and broad response of local officials.

The Hurley Police, Iron County Sheriff’s and Hurley Fire departments were out in full force for the better part of seven hours. The area was efficiently evacuated and barricaded. Beacon Ambulance was on the scene and the Ironwood Public Safety Department was quick to come across the border for mutual aid.

The Iron County Human Services and Emergency Government offices were on alert. Personnel from the American Red Cross responded, as well.

In light of the deadly bombing near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, it brings renewed praise for the dedication and professionalism of our local emergency officials. We’re grateful for their service.

Nothing happened in Hurley on Saturday, except a lot happened, as our watchmen (and women) came together to keep us safe.

Thank you to all of you.
