Gogebic-Iron County Airport still busy, despite snow, frigid cold

Efficient, inexpensive ways to reach Minneapolis offered in flights from Ironwood Township

IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - With the Christmas travel season dwindling down, airports across the country are recovering from the rush.

Airlines for America, an industry trade organization, projected 25 million passengers would fly during the 12-day Thanksgiving period alone, from Nov. 22 to Dec. 3.

The numbers jump to 42 million passengersduring the 21-day Christmas holiday period, from Dec. 17 to Jan 6.

While 67 million passengers didn't fly through the Gogebic-Iron County Airport in Ironwood, it was busy, despite freezing temperatures and snow, according to airport manager Mike Harma.

Great Lakes Airlines operates two flights a day, one to Minneapolis and one back into Ironwood.

Despite rumors the airline is short on pilots, Harma said nothing has changed.

"We still have the same number of flights," Harma said.

With 327 days until Thanksgiving and travel season heating up again, Harma said flying out of Ironwood "speaks for itself," instead of driving to other locations.

"You can't get to Minneapolis for the same price by driving," Harma said.
