The new award honors longtime Mercer resident Joseph Manzanares, a youth sports coach and active Lions Club member. Huybrecht, the seventh through 12th grade winner, and Klopatek, the kindergarten through sixth grade winner, were chosen because they represent courage, character, community support, respectfulness and school spirit and both practice good sportsmanship every day, a news release said. Winners received a certificate and monetary award. Their names will be engraved on the Joseph Manzanares Sportsmanship Award plaque that will hang in the school.
