Trojans' quick start dooms Miners

CRYSTAL FALLS - Crystal Falls Forest Park built a 14-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game and defeated the Gogebic Miners 30-6 in Great Western Conference action Friday night.

Still, the Miners improved defensively and held the Trojans in check after the first two minutes even though Forest Park had standout Dan Nocerini back from injury.

"We just competed," Gogebic Mark Movrich said of the defense. "As far as scheme-wise, we didn't do anything different. The kids just competed, which was nice to see."

The Trojans scored on the second play of the game and then added another touchdown after a three-and-out by Gogebic. Forest Park added a safety to make it 16-0.

"After that, I thought we played very good football, especially on the defensive side," Movrich said.

In the second quarter, Gogebic quarterback Tim Buerger found Max Samardich for a 46-yard touchdown pass.

Forest Park made it 23-6 before the half. Buerger threw an interception in the end zone with eight seconds left.

The Trojans outscored Gogebic 7-0 in the second half.

Ryan Hemming led the Miners with 10 solo tackles and four assists. Freshman Cody Schwartz had eight tackles.

"For a freshman to see varsity action against a team like Crystal Falls, with their tradition and everything, I thought he handled himself well," Movrich said.

Caleb Greenough led the Miners with 79 yards on 18 carries. Collin Gagnon had 27 yards on three carries. Brayden Tomes rushed for 14 yards.

Gogebic (1-6) hosts Houghton Friday night in Bessemer.
