Ironwood - To celebrate local children's artwork, the Downtown Art Place hosted an art exhibit Thursday evening.

DAP Vice-President Gemma Lamb said children created all the works of art on display during art classes.

In class, Lamb said children worked on acrylic pieces, drawings, water colors and more.

Looking at the art work on display, Lamb said she was impressed. "It's amazing what they're able to do when they have the media and all the art tools ready for them," she said.

While in class, Bella Gaiser, 8, of Bessemer, said she liked cutting out leaves and then making it appear as if it were mirrored to make a piece of art.

In addition, she also made a picture of a bear. In the background, she said she wanted to color a night sky with "lots of stars." For Halloween, she created a "scary" art piece with lots of gravestones and ghosts under an eery night sky.

Bella's mom, Tammy, said she is "amazed" by her daughter's artistic ability.

"When she finger-painted in day care, she always had more than just colors, she usually always had something become of it," she said.

Serena Tauer, 10, of Hurley, talked about her artwork. The aspiring artist made a collage out of spare parts at DAP.

"This is driftwood," Tauer said. "This used to be a football thing I sprayed with spray paint. These are gears." On display at the exhibit was a picture of a flower she made. Tauer said she made the colorful flower at a local park.

"We got to make anything we wanted at the park," she said. "I decided to draw this one flower I liked because it was colorful. I put weeds around it and put a nice blue sky and a sun."

Below her flower picture was a snowman dressed in fancy clothing. "I decided to put leopard clothing on it," Tauer said.

After children admired all the pieces of art on display, they gathered for a pizza party.
