Ironwood — With snow in the forecast for Friday, Ironwood area residents are reminded the ban on overnight parking in the city is in effect.

Vehicles may not be parked on city streets from 2 to 6 a.m. so snowplow crews can clear the streets for traffic, effective Nov. 1.

Since there has been only a trace of snow so far, the Ironwood Public Safety Department has not been handing out tickets for overnight parking violations, but that will change.

Vehicles violating the ban will be towed away, with the owners responsible for the towing charges.

The forecast calls for rain and sleet to turn to snow tonight into Friday, with nearly a 100 percent chance of precipitation of some form. The rain began Wednesday after the skies turned black around 3 p.m. and thunder boomed at 4.

The high for Friday is predicted at only 35.

That will put a crimp into what has been an unseasonably mild, sun-filled November in which golfers have been getting out in big numbers and boaters are enjoying fall trout and salmon fishing on Lake Superior.

The good news is the mild temperatures should return by the weekend, with mostly sunshine in the forecast.

As of Wednesday, the average November temperature for Ironwood was 44.7 degrees, compared to the long-term norm of 34.8.

While the Gogebic Range had received only a trace of snow heading into today, the 110-year seasonal norm for this date is 6 inches. On Nov. 11, 1989, 42 inches had already fallen and 27 inches covered the ground, both records, according to the National Weather Service office in Marquette.

A year ago, around 90 inches of snow fell on Ironwood in November in a series of storms.
