Ironwood - The Ironwood welcome sign off McLeod Avenue that was destroyed in a rollover accident will be replaced to the tune of $14,000.

That's the amount the city received from its insurance company to replace the sign.

The city commission on Monday approved a bid from Creative Signs, of DePere, Wis., to design and erect a new sign.

The driver who was involved in the accident on Dec. 13, Tyler Strebe, 27, of Hurley, was uninsured.

The vehicle also struck two signs.

Strebe initially told Ironwood Public Safety Department officers that he had too much to drink in Hurley.

City manager Scott Erickson said there will also be some shrubbery work done in the green space in the Aurora Street-McLeod-Silver Street triangle area where the sign will be erected. The cost of the shrubbery work will be in addition to the cost of the sign. It will also be covered by insurance.

The city's new brand, or logo, is included in the design of the sign, as required as part of the bid.

The city received six bids for sign replacement. A team consisting of Mayor Annette Burchell, city commissioner Kim Corcoran and city staff members, including assistant community development director Tim Erickson, reviewed the proposals and recommended the DePere company.

The review team considered the quality of materials, durability, cost, overall design and creativity in the sign bids, in addition to following the city's brand standards.

According to company specifications, the sign will be 13 feet wide, 8.5 feet high and 20 inches deep.
