Ironwood Township - The fourth annual YooperBeiner Snowshoe Race and Walk will take place Saturday, Jan. 14, at Wolverine Nordic Ski Trails.

Plans call for a 10k race, a 5k race and a kids' race. The kids' race will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the other races starting at 11 a.m., at Wolverine Nordic Ski Trails.

The event will also feature door prizes, many provided by area businesses. According to Susan Spaete, almost everyone who came out last year received a prize.

Including the overall individual winners from the races, teams will also be able to participate in the events. There are three categories of teams, small teams will have up to 25 members, medium will have between 25 and 100 members, and large teams will have more than 100 members.

Teams with the largest number of members will receive traveling awards. This year, the fastest team will also receive a prize.

The team aspect of the races is meant to promote friendships as members of the team can either race competitively or walk with one another and enjoy snowshoeing together.

The profits from the event help maintain Wolverine throughout the year.

The kids race is separated into ages 4-6 and 7-12 and was created to help promote health and wellness in outdoor activities for children, which goes along with the Wolverine Nordic Ski Club mission which is to preserve promote and establish Nordic Skiing and to promote the value of lifetime physical fitness and athletic achievement.

The races will feature the same course as last year and will feature a section of the Wolverine ski loop as well as a section that takes the racers through the woods.

Wolverine members as well as Aspirus Ironwood Hospital members will serve as volunteers during the races.
