Ontonagon ends summer with bang, releases 61st annual Labor Fest schedule

ONTONAGON — The 61st annual Labor Festival will run in Ontonagon from Aug. 31 to Sept. 4.

There are many events planned centered around music, food and community.

The schedule includes:

Thursday, Aug. 31

—Ontonagon Christian Center Concert, 7 p.m., Christian Center, 22673 M-64.

Friday, Sept. 1

—Community Picnic at Village Marina Park, free pop, hot dogs and chips. Medical helicopter and emergency vehicles will be on display.

—Rock skipping championships, 6 p.m., Marina Launch Site. Pre-register at Marina Pavilion.

—A Salute to 10 years of Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital, Ontonagon Recreation Center, 7 to 10 p.m., music by Borderline and Mike Urbis. Refreshments available, door prizes. Tickets available at the door.

Saturday, Sept. 2

—Maxwell Street Day sidewalk sales, games, bounce house for kids, drawings at noon.

—Open houses at the museum and fitness center

—Labor Fest Auto Show, 8 a.m., registration begins, trophies and prizes awarded.

—Superior Golf Shoot Out, 9 a.m.

—Lip sync contest, 1 p.m., corner of Houghton and River streets. Cash prizes in adult, high school, elementary and preschool divisions. Register at 12:30 p.m.

—Rotary Club Log Scramble winner drawn at 4 p.m.

Sunday, Sept. 3

—Pancake Breakfast, 7:30-11 a.m., Holy Family Catholic Church

—Ed Hansen Memorial Run, Registration 8-9:45 a.m., run begins at 10 a.m.

—Labor Festival Parade, judging begins at noon, parade begins at 2 p.m. Floats; Marty’s Goldenaires Drum and Bugle Corps; area high school bands; and the Copper Country Clown Band.

—Following parade, concert at reviewing stand by Marty’s Goldenaires.

—Communityfest: 4-10 p.m., Recreation Center. Drawing for 50-50 at 8 p.m. Music, food and refreshments.

Monday, Sept. 4

—Kiddies parade, assembly 12:30 p.m. near Syls Restaurant, parade at 1 p.m. Prizes for every child entered. Parade led by Copper Country Clown Band special prizes for top entries in walking, bike, small and large pulling floats. No motorized or battery powered vehicles.
