Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties

Heritage chapter plans work weekends

The Heritage Chapter of the North Country Trail Association has a busy summer of work events and other activities planned for the section of the North Country National Scenic Trail it maintains.

The chapter, which maintains the trail through Iron County, is planning its first work event for mid-May.

This work event will consist of two parts, according to organizers.

The Heritage Chapter Volunteer and Intern Week begins May 14, organizers said, and will focus on a variety of things — including trail construction and structure repair.

“This work week is designed to coincide with Northland College’s May term and we have four interns signed up so far to work with Heritage volunteers,” chapter president Michael Stafford wrote in an email. “This event is designed to overlap with our regular work weekend on Saturday, May 18.”

The chapter’s normal work weekend is planned for May 18-19 and will focus on trail construction.

Chapter members and others interested in helping can volunteer for all or part of the work weekend.

There are camping options available at Copper Falls State Park and the Upson Falls campgrounds for workers interested in camping near the worksites, according to Stafford.

It is suggested volunteers bring water, a trail lunch, snacks and bug repellant.

According to the chapter’s event calendar; future work weekends are planned for June 8-9, July 13-14, Aug. 10-11, Sept. 14-15, Oct. 5-6 and Nov. 2-3.
