Ironwood — The Friends of the Ironwood Carnegie Library held its semi-annual book sale this past weekend, drawing people to come and pick up books to read through the cold winter months.

Friends President Carol Erickson spoke to the Globe on Friday about the book sale.

She explained that the book sales have been going on since the 1980s, with the Friends of the Ironwood Carnegie Library being officially recognized as a 501c3 since 2003.

“This year we have had a real outbreak of volunteers,” said Erickson. “Some of our regulars have not been able to be here, but other people stepped in beautifully.”

Erickson mentioned how the JROTC students from the Ironwood Area Schools helped move the boxes of books into the Memorial Building, helping get tables set up and organized for the sale.

“We think that we may have had a ‘book sale fairy,’” said Erickson. She said that between when the friends left on Thursday for the day, that several tables still needed to be organized, only for them to arrive Friday morning to those tables having been sorted.

The Altruist Riding Club was expected to help with this year’s clean-up, which was their first year, according to Erickson.

At the time of the interview, Erickson spoke about how amazing the turn-out had been, with people having lined up outside the door on Friday to get first pick of the books that were going on sale.

The selection saw a rather large number of young adult books compared to previous years, according to Erickson, “I’m not sure if we had a lot of donations this year, or if Lynne culled the shelves in the teen section.”

The money raised at the sale goes toward a number of projects at the library, a notable one being a new boiler, said Library Director Lynne Wiercinski.
