  • Hurley loses regional semi in double OT

    Pat Krause|Mar 2, 2019

HURLEY — Like two heavyweight boxers slugging it out in the middle of the ring in a championship fight, Birchwood finally emerged with a 63-61 double overtime victory over Hurley in a WIAA Division 5 regional semifinal game on Friday night. Birchwood will now advance to the championship game to play at top-seed Northwood. "It's unfortunate someone had to lose tonight," Birchwood coach Blane Senn said. "Hurley played their butts off. They got behind, but they kept working hard and got back in it. "We went to a full-court press and man defense a... Full story

    Pat Krause|Sep 8, 2018

BESSEMER - L'Anse coach Mark Leaf tried to alert football fans as to what a good football player Purple Hornet tailback Jonah Dowd was in the pigskin preview The Daily Globe does each week. But Dowd put on a performance rarely seen in these parts as L'Anse thumped Gogebic 34-6 in West-PAC action at Massie Field on Friday night. "We played a complete game tonight," Leaf said. "You worry about the long bus trip from L'Anse to Bessemer, but getting off to that fast start was really important for...

  • Miners bow to Copper Kings in opener

    Pat Krause|Aug 25, 2018

BESSEMER - Coach John Croze likes to ground and pound the ball on offense and play physical defense and his Calumet Copper Kings did both very well in the season opener against the Gogebic Miners. Calumet rolled over Gogebic 48-6 at Massie Field on Friday night. Miner coach Mark Mazzon was plenty impressed by the Copper Kings. "That's a heckuva team," Mazzon said. "They've got a good program and they are big and physical-you can tell that team has been in the weight room. They are going to give...

"The game was what we expected," Forest Park coach Dave Graf said. "It was hard-hitting, good physical football on both sides. I never thought we'd score 90 points. I thought we'd score four or five each (touchdowns). Ontonagon nearly came back on us. Jake Witt is the real deal...

    Pat Krause|Apr 26, 2017

IRONWOOD – Anticipation was in the air as a large-sized crowd gathered to watch the Gogebic Miners and Ironwood square off in a softball game on Tuesday. When it was over, a good Ironwood team defeated Gogebic 15-4, but the Red Devils only led 5-3 after three innings and the Gogebic f...

  • Hancock dominates Bessemer

    Pat Krause|Feb 3, 2017

BESSEMER — It's tough to win many games scoring 18 points in a varsity basketball game. That happened to the Bessemer Speedgirls on Thursday night and Bessemer went down to defeat at the hands of Hancock 60-18 in a non-conference game in the House of Noise. "Hancock plays tough man-to-man defense and they do it with six girls," Bessemer coach Gerry Pelissero said. "Our girls weren't comfortable playing against that defense. We only had five field goals (the whole game). "We survived the first q...

  • Chassell's size too much for Wakefield-Marenisco

WAKEFIELD - Chassell used its big edge in size and quickness to overcome Wakefield-Marenisco 63-44 in a Copper Mountain Conference match-up in the Cardinal Gym on Friday night. "We had an advantage with our height and our guard's quickness," Chassell coach Brandi Hainault said. "Our guards did a good job of moving the ball and our post players really pounded the boards. Our defense really helped the offense with turnovers. I'm a big defensive person. I believe it's the only way to win in the...

  • Cardinals stop Speedgirls

    Pat Krause|Dec 3, 2016

BESSEMER - Wakefield-Marenisco needed a huge fourth quarter to defeat the Bessemer Speedgirls 57-38 in a physical, hard-fought Copper Mountain rivalry game in the House of Noise on Friday. The Speedgirls held a 36-35 lead after three quarters and it had been a close game for 24 minutes of intense basketball. But the Cardinals stepped up their game...

    Pat Krause|Nov 5, 2016

WAKEFIELD - Wakefield-Marenisco's high hopes for an upset of Crystal Falls Forest Park in the Class D District 127 volleyball tournament finals were dashed by the fast, up-tempo starts of the Lady Trojans in all three sets. Forest Park played with a sense of urgency and defeated the Cardinals 25-12, 25-16 and 25-16. It was the 17th straight year CFFP has taken home the district tournament championship trophy. The narrow lanes with the round top first came into being in the 1920s. Deke Routheaux, who worked on the resurfacing and renovating, alo...

    Pat Krause|Dec 19, 2015

BESSEMER - Bessemer wanted to give their fans an early Christmas present, but a good Jeffers team would have no part of it and thumped the Speedgirls 61-31 in a Copper Mountain Conference game in the House of Noise on Friday night. "Bessemer is a good young team that is impressive on the inside and has good coaching," Jeffers coach Joe Romano said. "But they couldn't handle our press, especially early on. Every game, we usually go with a man-to-man press, But Bessemer is tall, so it was zone pre... Full story

"It feels good," Gogebic coach Mark Movrich said. "It's been awhile since we won a game. (Aug. 29). I watched a lot of film on Houghton and they gave Lake Linden and Northland Pines tough games. "We were down 6-0 most of the game," E-TC coach Larry Maki said of the battle between two Ontonagon County schools. "But the boys didn't quit. "I'm definitely glad for the win," Movrich said. "When you win that first game, it's easier to come back to practice and focus on the positive things we did and what we have to do better. "We made some first-game mistakes, but we were able to keep the ball moving and we've got some explosive backs. All too often, a line will just push or lean... Full story
