    HURLEY — The Hurley girls basketball team came back from Christmas break in a big way, defeating Bessemer 53-24 on Tuesday night in Hurley. The Midgettes started off with strong defense, outscoring Bessemer 13-0 in the first quarter and allowed only eight points at halftime. “Our defensive intensity was solid tonight,” coach Steve Eder said. “We only committed nine fouls, which was big.” Despite the early lead, Eder said his team played “sluggish and hesitant” throughout the game, something he was nervous about coming back from... Full story

  • Elected officials overestimate economic benefit of casino

    To the Editor, What a casino would do to this area is devastating. Is the petty promise for a few to a handful of jobs worth the effects of a casino on our community? Thomas A. Garrett, senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis in 2003, found that an increase in casino revenue decreases retail sales. Casino patrons will likely take their dollars away from certain activities; restaurants, movies, etc., and move them into casino gambling.     IRONWOOD - The Gogebic Community College board held its reorganizational meeting on Tuesday night and swore in three returning members. Robert Burchell, Thomas Brown and John Lupino were led in the administration oath of office by Linda Gustafson, administrative assistant to the president.   • Lake effect snow advisory issued

    IRONWOOD — A lake-effect snow advisory extended to noon today for the Ironwood area, according to the National Weather Service. From 2 to 7 inches of snow was possible, with the winds changing from the south to the north Tuesday night and into this morning, peaking at 20 to 30 mph, creating precipitation off Lake Superior. Wind chill readings from minus 25 to minus 35 were forecast along the lake. Today’s high for Ironwood was predicted at minus 5.     IRONWOOD - The sixth annual Sisu Ski Fest kicks off this week, featuring a variety of events. Friday features registration and bib pick-up from 4 to 10 p.m. for race participants at the Ironwood Memorial Building.   • Elsie 'Dolly' Murphy

    WAUSAU, Wis. - Elsie "Dolly" Murphy, 66, a resident of Ironwood for the last 24 years, died unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital in Wausau. She was born on Nov. 6, 1948, the the oldest child of the late Edward Spies, and Elsie Pedrin, of Wakefield, Mich., where she spent her youth helping with her younger siblings. Elise spent her married life as a stay at home mother and wife on KI Sawyer Air Force Base in Marquette, Mich., raising her two daughters, Mary and Sherry.... Full story
