    IRONWOOD — Without much fanfare, the company that plans on purchasing the former White Pine mine drilled for ore samples north of Ironwood over the summer. Ross Grunwald, vice-president of exploration for the Highland Copper Company Inc., told an audience of about 30 people Thursday at Gogebic Community College that the company had test drilled in the Bald Mountain area, near Lake Superior.   • Grocery store's pending closure prompts search for options

    HURLEY — News of the pending closure of the Super One grocery store in Hurley has prompted economic development officials to begin working on other options. According to Kelly Klein, of the Iron County Development Zone, “it’s very early in the process” of looking into other potential businesses for the building, located on Holiday Lane in Hurley. “There is an effort between my office and the owners of the building to reach out to other grocers,” Klein said.     NEW YORK (AP) - Fallout from Target's pre-Christmas security breach is likely to affect the company's sales and profits well into the new year. The company disclosed on Friday that the massive data theft was significantly more extensive and affected millions more shoppers than the company reported in December.   • Chemical spill brings West Virginia capital to standstill

    CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia authorities have ordered a company to remove the chemicals from its storage tanks after a spill contaminated the water supply of nine counties and forced residents to use bottled water. Officials at the Department of Environmental Protection ordered Freedom Enterprises Inc. late Friday to start removing all the chemicals in 14 above-ground storage tanks near the Elk River within 24 hours.     WAKEFIELD, Mich. - Charles H. Mott Jr., 76, of Bessemer, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, in Wakefield. He was born Sept. 1, 1937, in Ewen, son of the late Charles H. and Lillian (VanBlarcom) Mott. He resided in Ewen most of his life, moving to Bessemer in 2011. Charles was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving in the U.S. Army. On June 27, 1959, he was united in marriage with Patricia Lubarsky in Milwaukee. She preceded him in death in 2011. Charles is survived by three sons, Charles (Marsha)... Full story

    WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Devoted husband and father Rudy Reichardt, 90, of Watersmeet, Mich., was lifted to life eternal with his Lord on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, in Winter Haven. Rudy was born Aug. 28, 1923, to Rudolph and Isabelle Reichardt. Rudy graduated from Watersmeet High School and shortly thereafter enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II.     The Mercer Lioness community blood drive was held Tuesday, Jan. 7. There were 19 brave people that ventured out into the cold to donate blood. A milestone donor award was given to Janet Georgi for 11 gallons. Mercer Lioness members are grateful for the donors and volunteers who were involved in this drive, including Ann Bayer, Kathy Perko, LaRane Garrett, Barb Beschta, Lori Ackerman, Betty Meinholz and Dorothy Wahner.     HURLEY — It's been almost 10 years since an Indianhead Conference team came to Hurley and beat the Midgettes. It took a Division I prospect both times.
