  • Blank shots fired in school during mock disaster drill

    IRONWOOD — Blank shots were fired in the Luther L. Wright School on Friday as the Ironwood Area School District held a mock shooting drill during a teachers’ in-service day. All students were out of the building during the event, planned by the district and Ironwood Public Safety Department. Some employees in the building weren’t warned about the drill that included the shots, as well as screaming, banging and other noises. Those employees scrambled and hid under desks.   • Hurley second graders enjoy annual cross country ski program

    HURLEY - After four years of borrowing equipment to allow elementary students to participate in the cross country ski program, the Hurley School District was able to purchase equipment with help from grants and local donations. According to a newsletter, the Hurley PTO donated $900 to allow the district to purchase a track setter to groom the trails on school property.   • Government spends $30 million on forest restoration, logging

    HELENA, Mont. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Thursday it will spend $30 million this year on forest restoration projects in 12 states to reduce the threat of wildfires, protect water quality and improve wildlife habitat for at-risk species. Those first 13 projects will be the start of a multi-year initiative to improve the health of forests and watersheds on public and private lands, Agriculture Undersecretary Robert Bonnie said. (AP) - Hundreds of thousands of people spent a second day without electricity Thursday as utility crews from as far away as Canada and Arkansas scrambled to restore power lost when ice took down trees and limbs in the mid-Atlantic.   • Wider trade gap may mean slower Q4 economic growth

    WASHINGTON (AP) - The U.S. trade deficit widened in December after hitting a four-year low in November. But for 2013, the gap reached its lowest point since 2009 as exports rose to a record. Analysts said the larger-than-expected trade deficit for December would likely reduce estimates of growth in the October-December quarter. The government had initially estimated fourth-quarter growth at a 3.2 percent annual rate. But economists at Barclays say the bigger December gap could reduce that... Full story

    BONAIRE, Ga. - Wilbert C. "Wilber" Hill, 90, of M-64, Bergland, Mich., formerly of Bessemer, Mich., died peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, in Bonaire at his daughter Joan's home. He was born Feb. 14, 1923, in Bessemer, son of the late Oscar and Edith (Reed) Hill. Wilber attended the Barber School in Yale and the Washington School in Bessemer. He graduated from A.D.
