  • Snowshoe Extravaganza raises money for Hurley 4th of July fireworks

    GILE, Wis. - Organizers of the Hurley 4th of July fireworks held their second annual fundraising Snowshoe Extravaganza Saturday afternoon on the Gile Flowage. A total of 144 race participants showed up to take on the powder in their snowshoes. This year the Fireworks Committee added a bonfire and music at the Gile Park, with cooperation of Montreal city officials and fire department members. The Hurley Fire Department also helped.     Marisa Buerger, right, leads a choreographed routine as the Lil' Dribblers practice for their performance at halftime of tonight's Ironwood girls' varsity home basketball game against Bessemer. The Lil' Dribblers is made up of second through seventh graders and led by Buerger as well as Rachel Boyd and Doug Foley.   • Powderhorn hosts Cat Clowder

    BESSEMER - Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort hosted the Midwest Cat Clowder all day Saturday. Vintage sno-cats and groomers were on display at the base of the hill. The owners of these machines were available to talk with people about their machines and about their group. Kirk Citurs of Scranton, Iowa, traveled nearly 500 miles for the event. Citurs brought along his restored 1962 Snow-Trac he purchased a few years ago in Seattle. Snow-Tracs were manufactured in Sweden and only about 2,500 were... Full story

    IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP. Mich. — Peter A. Kalember Jr., 55, of Sunset Road, Ironwood Township, died unexpectedly Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015, in his home. He was born Oct. 28, 1959, in Virginia, Minn., son of Betty (Ray) and the late Peter Kalember Sr., and graduated from Red Wing Central High School, Red Wing, Minn., in 1979. He then attended Golden Valley Lutheran College and served two years stateside in the U.S. Air Force, moving to Ironwood in 2004. Peter was a great outdoorsman and fisherman.     L’ANSE, Mich. — Larry L. Ross, 72, of Watton, passed away suddenly Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital in L’Anse. Larry was born in Goodrich, on Dec. 31, 1942, the son of the late Jessie and Sylvia (Copenen) Ross. He graduated from L’Anse High School in 1961. He then attended Northern Michigan University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1981. Larry married the former Judith Niemela in Covington on June 29, 1963.     IRONWOOD - The site of the tournament matchup between these two teams had already been determined, but Saturday's game was proof of how much of a rivalry this has become. Dakota County Technical College defeated Gogebic Community College 67-64 Saturday in a fantastic game that featured 11 lead changes and seven ties. DCTC swept the regular-season matchups.
