BESSEMER - Faculty and staff in the Bessemer School District participated in a mock shooting drill Friday during an in-service day. The drill was held at A.D. CHEBOYGAN (AP) — From the bridge of the Coast Guard cutter Mackinaw, northern Lake Huron looks like a vast, snow-covered field dotted with ice slabs as big as boulders — a battleground for the icebreaker’s 58-member crew during one of the roughest winters in memory. BESSEMER - After more than 40 years of seeking a solution to keeping the Oman's Creek boat landing from frequently washing shut, it appears some action is on the horizon. It might not be the near horizon, but the Gogebic County Board of Commissioners learned Wednesday that the Department of Natural Resources at least has the Lake Superior site on its radar. HURLEY, Wis. - Donald C. Brown, 93, formerly of Ironwood Township, Mich., died Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, at Sky View Nursing Center in Hurley. He was born Feb. 4, 1921, in Ramsay, Mich., son of the late Joseph and Aina (Anderson) Brown, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in Ironwood in 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Aug. 4, 1942, proudly serving his country during World War II in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater of Operations, and was honorably discharged as a staff... BESSEMER, Mich. - Glen B. Perttula, 64, of Bessemer, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, in his home. He was born Feb. 7, 1950, in Ironwood, the son of the late Leonard Nelo and Annette Selma (Johnson) Perttula. Glen attended A.D. Johnston High School, graduating in 1965. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from May 5, 1971, until May 14, 1974, attaining the rank of corporal. He received the National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Rifle Expert Badge. UNION GROVE, Wis. - John Lahti, 88, of Union Grove, passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Home in Union Grove, with his family at his side. He was born Nov. 25, 1925, in Bessemer, Mich., the son of the late John and Wilhemina (Kinnunen) Lahti. He was educated in the schools of Bessemer.
