    HOUGHTON — For the second year in a row, Ironwood JROTC cadets left the Michigan Technological University campus overall winners of the Day of Challenges competition. Sponsored by the Michigan Veterans of Foreign Wars and Michigan Tech Army and Air Force programs, the competition took place Feb. 27 and consisted of a series of events focusing on teamwork, as well as mental and physical challenges.     By TOM STANKARD [email protected] BESSEMER — The three people who were arrested following an investigation by the Gogebic-Iron Area Narcotics Team have been scheduled for arraignment. On Thursday, Feb. 11, GIANT executed a search warrant at a Bessemer residence on Porter Street, resulting in the arrest of Dylan Robert Smith, 27, of Bessemer; Michael Scott Johnson, 27, of Ramsay; and and Stephanie Juntti, 22, of L’Anse.     IRONWOOD, Mich. - Gerald T. "Jerry" Bidgood, 93, of Ironwood, died peacefully Thursday afternoon, March 3, 2016, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Jerry was born March 20, 1922, in Mellen, Wis., son of the late Frank and Kate (Hofstra) Bidgood, and graduated from Mellen High School in 1940. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Nov. 2, 1942, and proudly served his country as a rifleman in North Africa during World War II, receiving a Purple Heart for wounds received in action in Tunisia... Full story

    IRONWOOD, Mich. - Vera E. Cox, 84, of Bessemer, died Thursday, March 3, 2016, in Ironwood with her family by her side. She was born March 25, 1931, in Berlin, Germany, daughter of the late Wilhelm and Gertrude Dallmann. Vera was employed as a dressmaker in Germany. During a vacation at Pine Lake in 1969 she met Charles R. Cox Sr. They were united in marriage on May 2, 1970, in Bessemer. Charles preceded her in death on June 19, 2001.     BESSEMER, Mich. - William V. "Bill" Montonati, 66, of Bessemer, passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at his home. He was born June 20, 1949, in Ironwood, the son of the late Peter and Lucy (Tuoro) Montonati. Bill graduated from A.D. Johnston High School with the Class of 1967. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January of 1968 where he served on a destroyer. Bill was honorably discharged in January of 1972.
