  • Warm up with rich pork, hominy, salsa stew

    Mar 21, 2014

By ELIZABETH KARMEL Associated Press It all started at my friend Anthony's house not long ago during the beginning the so-called polar vortex. He is a gifted home cook and a food television producer, so he knows his way around a pot. He also is from Texas and we share a love of tequila, barbecue and anything Tex-Mex! That icy night, Anthony made an amazing pork stew with loads of chilies, cilantro and garlic. The flavors and textures were at once warm, comforting, fresh and exciting. The minute...

  • Payneful day for Delaware Blue Hens

    Mar 21, 2014

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Adreian Payne sent Tom Izzo a text. He wants to leave a legacy. Consider it done. The 6-foot-10 senior played the game of his life Thursday, scoring a career-high 41 points to help fourth-seeded Michigan State look every bit like a March Madness favorite in a 93-78 victory over Delaware. "He was playing in another zone, not even in the ozone," Izzo said. "He was in Pluto and beyond." This marked the first 40-point performance in the NCAA tournament since Stephen Curry did...

  • Support school consolidation, not bond

    Mar 21, 2014

To the Editor: I’m a member of the Bessemer Area School Board. I proudly support consolidation with the Wakefield-Marenisco School District. Consolidation means greater opportunity for all of our students. Many people want it. Bessemer’s school board doesn’t. They have another agenda. Bessemer’s school board wants taxpayer approval of a highly questionable bond proposal. Taxpayers don’t want it. We can’t afford it. Voters said no last year, loud and clear. Bessemer’s school board wasn’t listening. State transition funds are available if consoli...

  • Bond referendum best choice for Bessemer

    Mar 21, 2014

To the Editor: All of us in Bessemer are confident and proud that our schools rank among the region’s best. That’s quite a testament to the teachers and parents that make education such a high priority for our students. But the job of educating our kids becomes more difficult every year. Our two schools have old and very inefficient mechanical and lighting systems and building controls, roofs and windows that have become excessively expensive to continue repairing. They are wasting energy and money that could be used to help educate our stu...
