    Pat Krause|Jul 19, 2013

BESSEMER  — According to Gogebic Country Club golf professional, Tyler Leskela, it is the largest golf tournament in the U.P. and northern Wisconsin with 100 two-person teams and a waiting list to get in. And it’s been like that for two decades. It’s the Milakovich Memorial Tournament and it will be played this weekend at the Gogebic Country Club with golfers teeing off at 7 a.m. on Saturday. But it’s more like a golf reunion or homecoming than just a golf tournament. That’s because...

  • Road once traveled

    Katie Perttunen|Jul 19, 2013

IRONWOOD — Chris Hillier arrived at Festival Ironwood in the Depot Park on Thursday afternoon, ending a 924-mile hike from Detroit. In December, Gov. Rick Snyder announced he was going to make Michigan the trails mecca of the Midwest, and wanted a non-motorized trail from Belle Isle in Detroit to Ironwood. The trail hasn’t been officially named yet, but Hillier said he will call it the Ironwood Trail, because he has been dreaming of reaching Ironwood for 11 weeks. Hillier is the first to...

Thanks to everyone who has recruited me, and everyone for the support,” Gussert tweeted. The 6-foot Gussert was...

  • Consider mine's pollution impact in Iron County

    Jul 19, 2013

To the Editor: It is widely observed that support for a taconite mine is much higher in Iron County than in Ashland County. This stems primarily from the fact that Ashland County is downstream from the proposed mine, and stands to suffer the brunt of any water pollution issues. Many Iron County residents are not yet aware that they will be downwind from one of the heaviest air polluters in Wisconsin should a taconite processing facility be built. While it is fair to entertain the argument that many are willing to sacrifice some level of clean...

  • Once-mighty Motor City files for bankruptcy

    Jul 19, 2013

DETROIT (AP) — Once the very symbol of American industrial might, Detroit became the biggest U.S. city to file for bankruptcy Thursday, its finances ravaged and its neighborhoods hollowed out by a long, slow decline in population and auto manufacturing. The filing, which had been feared for months, put the city on an uncertain course that could mean laying off municipal employees, selling off assets, raising fees and scaling back basic services such as trash collection and snow plowing, which...
