    GILE, Wis. - Most fishermen are used to seeing the unfortunate sight of strands of monofilament fishing line in the water and surrounding brush, a sight the Friends of the Gile Flowage hopes becomes less common. It has recently installed PVC-pipe fishing line recycling units at boat launches around the flowage.     SILVER CITY — Experienced sawyers with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources are heading to Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park to help clean up downed trees from last week’s snow and ice storm. On April 26-27, higher elevations at the park received up to an inch of ice, which was then covered by two to four inches of snow. Numerous trees were weighed down and weakened by the thick coating of ice and snow.     WAKEFIELD, Mich. - Eddie John Sandene passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, after a short illness. Eddie was born Aug. 17, 1932, in Ironwood, to Atte and Selina (Simila) Sandene. He attended Ironwood area schools and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School. He married Dolores Facchinello on Feb. 19, 1955. In his younger years he worked as a logger, hauling timbers to the area iron ore mines and hauling fallen trees from the Porkies after a tornado. One of his favorite stories... Full story
