    IRONWOOD - Hundreds of families made their way to the Pat O'Donnell Civic Center Monday for the annual Range Shrine Club 3-Ring Circus. According to Ray Niemi, Range Shrine Club president and circus chairman, the event originally took place at Luther L. Wright High School in Ironwood, before moving to the civic center.     MERCER, Wis. - The Mercer Spanish Club celebrated Cinco de Mayo, hosting a fiesta for community members at the Mercer School on Monday. Cinco de Mayo, or fifth of May, is a holiday in Mexico, commemorating the Battle of Puebla in 1862 over the French. The holiday is popular throughout Mexico and in the United States. Students got into the holiday spirit, whipping up traditional Mexican dishes, including quesadillas, Spanish rice, Mexican wedding cake and Mexican punch, filled with fruit.... Full story

  • Little Sand Bay Harbor repair project begins

    BAYFIELD, Wis. - Apostle Islands National Lakeshore staff members have been working on improvements to the Little Sand Bay Harbor. Around five years ago, floating finger piers were damaged by the ice. Since then, only two finger piers had been useable. Last year, National Park Service funding for needed work became available.     MADISON, Wis. - Mary D. Fontecchio, 90, formerly of Ironwood, Mich., died Friday, May 2, 2014, in Madison. She was born May 6, 1923, in Bessemer, Mich., daughter of the late Max and Anna (Gabardi) Sterny. Mary attended Bessemer schools. In 1942, she was united in marriage with Herman (Nig) Fontecchio. While living in Ironwood, Mary worked as a cook in several area restaurants. She was known for her homemade pasta, spaghetti sauce recipes and bakery.     WAUKESHA, Wis. - Jeane Loraine Arducant, 88, of Ironwood, Mich., passed away peacefully Sunday, May 4, 2014, at Seasons Hospice in Waukesha. Jeane was born on June 15, 1925, in Highbridge, Wis., daughter of the late Waino R. and Alma (Pintamo) Mattson.     BERGLAND, Mich. — Neil Kalember, 69, of Bergland, passed away on May 2, 2014. He was born and raised in Bergland and graduated from Bergland High School, marrying his high school sweetheart, Marian (Nordine) Kalember, in 1965. He was employed at White Pine Copper and then as an elementary teacher at Posen Consolidated Schools for 29 years. He was an excellent basketball and baseball player and loved all sports.
