  • Planning commission approves permits for Xcel Energy's move

    IRONWOOD - A site plan and conditional use permit for Xcel Energy's move into Ironwood's industrial park were approved Thursday by the planning commission. Russ Kiviniemi, a professional engineer with Cedar Corporation, of Menomonie, Wis., outlined project plans for Xcel, with a half-dozen citizens attending the public hearing. Kiviniemi said some wetland permits from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality must still be obtained, but the company doesn't anticipate any major snags.... Full story

  • Iron County Development Zone aims to help businesses

    HURLEY - The Iron County Development Zone Council invited local businesses and organizations to Sharon's Coffee Company on Thursday evening to go over an annual report. Started in 1989, coordinator Kelly Klein said the development zone has served to help the county create jobs and get more investments. It works with businesses to help them expand through loan programs or get into the industrial park. Klein said the park generates business for the economy and has space available.     HURLEY, Wis. - Verne M. Niemi, 91, of Kimball, died peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2015, at Villa Maria Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hurley, with his loving family by his side. He was born March 22, 1924, in Calumet, Mich., son of the late Matt and Lydia (Pyala) Niemi, and attended school there. He worked in Calumet mines prior to entering the U.S. Army and serving in the European Theater of Operations in Belgium during World War II.     DULUTH, Minn. - Joseph J. Cattelino, 86, of Saxon, Wis., died peacefully Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2015, at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, with his loving family by his side. He was born Aug. 1, 1929, in Gile, Wis., son of the late Joseph and Mary (Gallo) Cattelino, and graduated from J. E. Murphy High School in Hurley in 1948. He then was a self-employed trucker prior to moving to Saxon in 1956. He was married to the former Patricia A. Allen on May 29, 1956, in Madison, Wis.... Full story
