  • Hurley kindergarteners learn 'ABC's' of bike safety

    HURLEY - Kindergarteners learned a different kind of alphabet Thursday at the Hurley K-12 School during a bike safety presentation by the Hurley Police Department. Students learned the "ABCs" of bike safety from Sgt. Chris Colassaco, who explained that each spring, bikes should be checked for three things - air in the tires, brakes and chain tightness.   • Speed trailer installed on McLeod Avenue

    IRONWOOD - The Ironwood Public Safety Department has placed a speed trailer along McLeod Avenue to help insure drivers respect the posted speed limit of 25 mph on the U.S. 2 detour route. Lt. Mike Rimkus of IPSD said officers are monitoring drivers' speeds along the route using both moving and stationary radar.   • GCC may expand Early College program

    IRONWOOD - Gogebic Community College's Board of Trustees heard that a number of schools in the Copper Country are showing interest in its Early College program during an update at its meeting on Tuesday. Calumet School District is completing its first year of the program, with about 85 students participating at GCC's Copper Country Center.     MIDDLE RIVER, Wis. — Lillian Kostac, 98, of Hurley, died Monday, May 26, 2014, in Middle River. She was born March 13, 1916, in Bessemer, Mich., daughter of the late Jacob and Allegonda (Harteloo) Groenen. Lillian attended St. Sebastian Catholic Grade School and graduated from A.D. Johnston High School with the class of 1933. She studied nursing and was first a nurses aide and then a licensed practical nurse at Grand View Hospital for more than 18 years.
