  • Lupine Junefest draws bikes, cars, crafts

    MERCER, Wis. — Saturday was a beautiful day for a bike ride for the 148 riders gathered in Mercer to celebrate Lupine Junefest, despite a lack of lupine this year. Linda and Glen Gilbert from Shawano, Wis., enjoyed their second year at the race on their tandem bicycle. “It’s the only time he listens to me,” Linda Gilbert said from the front of their two-seater. The Gilberts planned to ride for 50 miles on Saturday. The festival also offered planned routes for 10, 20 and 26 miles.... Full story

    IRONWOOD — “The Porkies is a place full of wonder and legend. It’s a wonderful place for imaginary crimes,” Henry Kisor, mystery writer, told a crowd of about 20 Saturday morning at Ironwood’s Carnegie Library. Kisor discussed his fourth Steve Martinez mystery, Hang Fire. Martinez is the fictional police officer in Kisor’s novels who keeps finding another mystery to solve in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Hang Fire is a term which refers to the misfire of a muzzle loader, said Kisor.... Full story

  • Ironwood hosts city clean up event

    IRONWOOD — Saturday morning volunteers gathered at Ironwood’s Depot Park to pick up litter from city streets as part of Make a Difference Day. About 20 people came, said city manager Scott Erickson. After meeting at the Depot, volunteers spread out on their routes, armed with trash bags. “It’s a good opportunity for kids,” said Erickson. After their work, the volunteers were treated to a cookout at the Depot Park.... Full story

  • Steiger, Erickson win soggy Battle of the Bluff

    HURLEY –Tim Steiger of Bessemer and Scott Erickson of Hurley slogged through some very wet playing conditions on Sunday and shot a 139 total to win the Championship Flight in this weekend’s Battle of the Bluff golf tournament at the Eagle Bluff Golf Club. “It was really hard,” Steiger said. “The course was good, but the fairways were real wet.” Golfers said there were periods of hard rain during their rounds on the final day.     To the Editor: Apparently, Michigan and some other states may become more immoral. That is unless savvy people like yourself contact your elected servants at all levels and explain to them that with immorality comes consequences, deterioration and destruction. Immorality comes in many forms, from the taking of innocent life to self-gratification, homosexuality and even greed.
