IRONWOOD - The new ice-making system at the Patrick O'Donnell Civic Center is allowing summer open skating for the first time. Civic center manager Brian Roehm said Tuesday he hopes for a good turnout of skaters from Friday through July 4, a test period for the new system. The new ice-making equipment was first used last fall and Roehm had no complaints about how it performed during the winter months. "With kids being out of school, we're hoping for a good response. The board approved canceling the outstanding checks from 2012, a total of around $1,312. The amount will be transfered into the county's general fund. To the Editor: In regard to the consolidation issue, we need to vote on it, for or against it. Many mistakes were made in the process of drafting and circulating the petition, but the intention was in the right. Those who are opposed to it may fall into two categories. They are afraid it would pass or they are afraid their financing isn’t in order if it does. Some may have personal reasons. This is a time when the electorate has to have its say. To the Editor: For nine seasons I have enjoyed watching “America’s Got Talent,” or AGT — until June 17. AGT is billed as a family show, but the audition of 12-year-old Josh Orlian as a “stand-up comedian” ruined that image. The sixth grade boy recited “jokes” that were all of sexual nature. For this to be allowed and then to be given four “yes” votes by the judges is disheartening. An older person reciting such garbage would have been viewed as perverted. IRONWOOD, Mich. - Audrey Jean (Nordine) Kapelka, 37, of Ironwood, passed away unexpectedly Monday morning, June 23, 2014. Audrey was born on May 4, 1977, in Ironwood, a daughter of Rodger Wayne and Mary Irene (Thompson) Nordine. She attended Washington Grade School and graduated from A.D. Johnston High School in 1995.
