BESSEMER — The 25th annual Bessemer Hometown Run was held Saturday as part of the Bessemer Blast 2013 weeklong celebration. As the weather cooperated with no rain and temperatures in the mid 60s, 277 runners/walkers participated in the 10-kilometer run and 2-mile walk/run. Dave Rowe, teacher at A.D. IRONWOOD — The warm days, cool nights recent weather trend is expected to continue through the Fourth of July and a few days after, according to the National Weather Service in Marquette. There’s little chance of precipitation in the immediate forecast, with a 20 percent probability of a thunderstorm on Thursday, so there shouldn’t be any rain on area parades. To the Editor: Lately there has been a rash of accidents at the intersection of U.S. 2 and Country Club Road near Ironwood. I have heard many comments about that intersection. Some want more signage or lights. I think that the answer to this problem is a no-brainer. I’ve been driving since 1965 and this is the only stoplight-controlled intersection that I have seen where the speed limit is 55 mph. If the speed limit was reduced to 35 mph a reasonable distance from the intersection, the problem would take care of itself. Roger Anderson W... Full story
BROOKFIELD, Wis. — Caryl Elizabeth (Erickson) James of Brookfield, was born to eternal life Saturday, June 29, 2013. She started her life on earth Sept. 16, 1929, born to Clarence and Caroline Erickson (Treloar) in Milwaukee, and grew up in Ironwood and Hancock, Mich. KENOSHA, Wis. — Ken Wiele, formerly of Ironwood, Mich., is a semifinalist in a competition for music educators to be honored at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles in January 2014. Wiele, director of bands at Indian Trail High School and Academy in Kenosha, has been nominated for the “Music Educator Award,” a joint effort of The Recording Academy and the Grammy Foundation. BESSEMER— Michigan State University Extension’s 4-H offered a Science Blast for local children Monday afternoon at Bluff View Park in Bessemer. Children took part in six activity stations: creating lava lamps, “chicken clucker,” making catapults, crazy putty and judging age of trees by their rings.
