To the editor: Pride reigns strong in our community once again. This was evident when the B-47 Veterans Memorial was dedicated on June 27, along with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the crash site on June 28. Family members of the deceased airmen, invited dignitaries, veterans and community members chose to take part in this grassroots, all-volunteer endeavor, which is now a state official tourist veterans attraction, as well as a Wisconsin Veterans Administration official designated Veterans Memorial. WAKEFIELD - Callie Fischer, 18, of Green Bay, Wis., and Dave Hebert, 21, of Iron River, Mich., were the overall female and male winners, respectively, in the 37th Annual Sunday Lake Run/Walk on Friday. Both runners said the race had "perfect" weather conditions and times were fast for many runners. Fischer finished the 2.8 mile course in 17:43 and Hebert was timed in a blazing 14:34. BESSEMER — Bessemer Blast 2014 came to a close Friday night with a spectacular “Thunder on the Mountain” fireworks show that lasted about 40 minutes and attracted quite the crowd. Before the fireworks display, Marty’s Goldenaires Senior Drum and Bugle Corps held a performance at Massie Field. IRONWOOD, Mich. - Ahti A. Nurmela, 93, of Ironwood, died Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at Westgate Nursing, Rehabilitation and Assisted Living Community in Ironwood. He was born Dec. 30, 1920, in Ironwood, son of the late Arvid and Selina (Mattson) Nurmela, and attended local schools. He was employed across the Upper Peninsula in logging and later in bridge construction by the J.K. Jackson Co. of Ironwood, and also in construction by A. OAK HARBOR, Wash. - Bernard Einar Skud, 87, died at his home in Oak Harbor on April 16, 2014. Bernie was the son of Ferdinand and Elma (Hendrickson) Skud, born Jan. 31, 1927, in Ironwood. He attended George N. Sleight Elementary School and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School. He delivered papers as a boy and as a member of the L.L. MERCER, Wis. - Hundreds of people lined U.S. 51 through downtown Mercer Friday to celebrate the Fourth of July. The town held its annual parade, featuring floats, classic cars, motorcycles and fire trucks. "Pedal and Paddle" was the theme of the parade, allowing entrants to use their creativity using bikes, canoes or kayaks.
