  • Grant may help local cities remove blighted properties

    BESSEMER - Gogebic County is one of five counties in Michigan expecting grant monies from the state to help remove a few of its blighted properties. Gogebic County Treasurer Sue Pertile said she hasn't officially received documentation, but she's heard from officials in Marquette County, the county acting as lead agent on the grant proposal, that it's going through. There are three blighted properties, two in Ironwood and one in Bessemer, that officials are hoping to eliminate with a grant... Full story

  • Iron officials hear update on delinquent taxes

    HURLEY - The Iron County Finance Committee heard an update on tax-delinquent properties in Iron County during a meeting Thursday morning. Nineteen properties throughout Iron County are on a list for being tax delinquent for four years, 2010-2013. To delay the county taking the property, property owners have to pay the taxes from the furthest year of delinquency, 2010.   • Saltwater cleanup area extends 2 miles after North Dakota spill

    MANDAREE, N.D. (AP) - The path of brine spilled from an underground North Dakota pipeline extends nearly 2 miles down a steep ravine, but dead vegetation is limited to about 200 yards from the source of the spill, a company official said Thursday. Miranda Jones, vice president of Crestwood Midstream Partners Inc., said the cause of the spill appears to involve a separation of the pipe that carries saltwater, a byproduct of the oil drilling process.     BRUCE CROSSING, Mich. — Jean C. Mongeon, 71, of Bruce Crossing, passed away July 8, 2014, surrounded by her family. Jean is survived by her brother, Roger Halquist; children, Carol Halquist, Mark Mongeon, Monique Gordon and Yvonne Raether; and nine grandchildren. She is preceded in death by parents, Harold and Lila Halquist; husband, Gerald Mongeon; and one daughter, Yvette Lee. A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church of Ewen at 1 p.m. on Saturday July 12, 2014.... Full story

Marge was born July 28, 1925 to Hilda (Matilla) and Julius Helgren in Ironwood.     Toivo Savonen, 86, passed away July 9, 2014. Toivo was born in Ironwood, Mich., to the late Onnie and Ida Savonen. He grew up on a small farm and helped with chores, working with his grandpa. After high school he went to work in a foundry in Muskegon. He married Bertha Peltomaki on Feb. 11, 1950. Toivo helped start the White Pine Copper Co. plant and worked in the underground mine for a short time. In November of 1955 Toivo and Bertha moved to Silver Bay Minn., to work for Reserve Mining Co.... Full story
