  • Ballot language proposed for 10-year street millage

    IRONWOOD — Ironwood residents will likely vote in November on a special 10-year, $2 million millage to fund street improvements. The city commission voted 5-0 on Monday to approve referendum language seeking to authorize levying two mills per year for street projects. The ballot language now goes to Gogebic County Clerk Gerry Pelissero for approval. The proposal needed to be submitted to the county clerk's office by Aug. 27.   • Bessemer receives Johnson's resignation

    BESSEMER — Bessemer School Board received district administrator Mark Johnson's resignation letter late Sunday night, effective June 30. Board President Robert Berg read the letter to the crowd at Monday evening's school board meeting. In the letter, Johnson gave his appreciation for the board, staff, families, and the community. Johnson said that as a team, the school surpassed the goal of making Bessemer the best school district in the western Upper Peninsula.     IRONWOOD — The Ironwood Area School Board of Education approved the hiring of an elementary principal during Monday's meeting at Luther L. Wright School in Ironwood. The board approved the hiring of Nicholas Steinmetz, of St. Clair Shores, pending results from a background check of possible criminal history.     The 21st running of the Festival Ironwood Walk, Run and Roll held on July 20 was met with a record turnout. “We had 230 entrants which tops all past 20 years,” said Chris Bergquist, race director. “It really helped that our two mile female winner, Carolyn (Andresen), was getting married later in the day.
