    MERCER, Wis. — Hundreds of people walked through downtown Mercer on Wednesday for the 33rd annual Loon Day celebration. Vendors lined U.S. 51, as well as numerous side streets, selling a variety of homemade items, including jewelry, lawn decorations, clothes, food and more.   • Ontonagon recycling program offers update

    To the Editor: As of August 2013, there are 16,988 school groups recycling ink and laser jet cartridges and cellphones through the Funding Factory program. WOAS-FM joined this program to recycle items on behalf of the Ontonagon Area Schools in 1998. Currently, WOAS-FM ranks 308th on this list in terms of the number of qualifying units recycled. Math wizards out there will note that this places our collection program in the top 1.8 percent in the United States despite our small, rural population base.     DETROIT — Rebecca Swett successfully defended her doctoral thesis in the chemistry department at Wayne State University in Detroit on July 23. Swett’s successful defense of her thesis, “Computational Approaches for Anti-toxin Therapies and Biomarker Identification,” earned her a Doctor of Philosophy degree. She worked on the thesis with professors Andreas Cisneros and Andrew Feig for five years. Swett has accepted a position with a company in Boston and has relocated there.     DULUTH, Minn. — Gerald F. “Jerry” DeCarlo, 60, of Ironwood, Mich., died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, surrounded by his loving family, at Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, following a brief, courageous battle with lung cancer. Jerry was born Jan. 31, 1953, in Wakefield, Mich., son of Tom and the late Louise (Champagne) DeCarlo, attended St. Ambrose Grade School in Ironwood, and graduated from Ironwood Catholic High School in 1972.
