    BESSEMER - New Gogebic Miners' football coach Mark Movrich has 35 players to work with in his first season. Movrich coached JV football for the Miners before this. Gogebic is coming off of three straight playoff berths. The Miners started practice Monday evening at Massie Field in Bessemer.     IRONWOOD, Mich. - Janice I. Sopko, 83, of Bessemer, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, at Aspirus Grand View Hospital in Ironwood. The former Janice Hodges was born May 29, 1932, in Nashopa, Okla., daughter of the late Harvey and Emma (Carpenter) Hodges. She was married to Robert Price in 1948. They later divorced. She then married Arthur Sopko on June 27, 1983, in Las Vegas. They resided in California prior to moving to Ironwood in 1995 and later to Bessemer in 1996. Janice was a loving wife,... Full story

  • Planning Commission tables special request to crush rocks

    BESSEMER TOWNSHIP - The Bessemer Township Planning Commission held a meeting on Tuesday to address Gerald Lukach's special approval permit for rock crushing. After much discussion, the commission ultimately approved to table the permit and wait until they hear back from their attorney. Then they will vote on the matter during a special meeting on Thursday, Aug. 20. According to the agenda, Lukach's pit is located between Powderhorn and Black River Roads.   • Ironwood demolition projects to be completed by October

    IRONWOOD — The 10 structures approved for demolition Monday by the Ironwood City Commission will be torn down within 60 days. Commissioners approved nearly $150,000 in demolition projects, to be covered by a $675,000 state grant received by the city. Snow Country Contracting will handle nine of the projects and Associated Constructors will complete one. Ironwood Community Development Director Michael Brown said if the contractors don’t get the projects done within the designated 60 days, they will face fines.
