  • Airport Recreation Park celebrates grand opening

    IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - Ironwood Township will celebrate the grand opening of the Airport Recreation Park on Tuesday. The event runs from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the pavilion at the park. According to treasurer Jyl Olson-DeRosso, the park is "a decade in the making." Over the last 10 years, the township has acquired surrounding property, built soccer fields and more recently added a pavilion, walking track and playground equipment. The secluded Potato River Falls, in Gurney, Wis., and Bond Falls, in Paulding, are among the best in the country, according to CNN.     WAKEFIELD, Mich. - John L. Geroux, 89, Wakefield, passed away July 7, 2014, at the Health and Rehabilitation Center, Ashland, Wis. His daughters, Jerry and Joan, were with him shortly before his death. He was the son of Edward B. Geroux and Ila Geroux, of Wakefield. Born on Oct. 2, 1924, in Wakefield, he attended Wakefield schools, graduating with the Class of 1942.     ASHLAND, Wis. - Helen Marie (Worobay) Dawson, 81, of Ashland, passed away with her loving family by her side, after a courageous fight with a long illness on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, at Memorial Medical Center in Ashland. She was born Aug. 1, 1933, in Ashland, the daughter of Mike and Valeria (Janowski) Worobay. Helen was a lifelong resident of Ashland.     WAKEFIELD, Mich. — Marie Colberg, 92, of Wakefield, formerly a longtime resident of Ramsay, passed away Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014. She was born on July 28, 1922, in Margie, Minn., the seventh of 10 children to the late Clarence and Loretta (Hall) Hamilton. Marie attended Roosevelt School in Marenisco. During World War II, she moved to Ann Arbor and found employment as a “Rosie the Riveter.” On June 15, 1946, Marie married Erick Makela, and they were blessed with three sons.
