    BESSEMER - New waste disposal services begin Sept. 2 in Bessemer and with it will come a change in pick-up days and no more blue trash bags. At its meeting Monday, the city council approved a resolution establishing the trash and recycling collection fee of $17 per month with the city's new provider, Eagle Waste & Recycling, Inc., of Eagle River, Wis. Residents who have received water or sewer services through the city will continue to get a bi-monthly utility bill, with the new trash and recycling services fee included.   • GCC winds up for first day of classes

    IRONWOOD - With classes set to begin Monday, Gogebic Community College administrators are gearing up for another busy year. "The whole of our existence is working with students," GCC president Jim Lorenson said. "While there's been a lot going on here during the summer break period, obviously when students and all the staff are back, it's a much more exciting time."   • Ontonagon County leads state in unemployment

    Ontonagon and Baraga counties were the only two western Upper Peninsula counties to see unemployment rates improve in July, according to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget. In Ontonagon County, the jobless rate fell from 13.1 percent in June to 12.6 percent in July. A year agoit was 14 percent. The labor force took a jump of 125 to 2,550 in July and 100 more people were employed in Ontonagon County. Total unemployment stayed the same at 325.   • Marty's Goldenaires wins first place at drum corps competition

    MENOMINEE — Marty’s Goldenaires Senior Drum and Bugle Corps won first place at a friendly competition with four other corps at a festival in Menominee. Marty’s Goldenaires marched and performed in the Waterfront Festival on Aug. 10 and won first place through a decision made by those in attendance. The festival brought musical acts who were members from the Small Drum Corps Association.     WAKEFIELD, Mich. - Adele L. Melchiori, 82, of Ironwood, died peacefully Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, surrounded by her loving family, at Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield. The former Adele Hulburd was born Jan. 20, 1932, in Detroit, daughter of the late John and Leila (Bernier) Hulburd, and graduated from Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor in 1949.
