    Pat Krause|Sep 10, 2013

WAKEFIELD — It’s not often that a good-sized crowd stands up at the end of a volleyball match and gives both teams a standing ovation. But that’s what happened at Cardinal Gym in Wakefield on Monday night as Bessemer eked out a razor-thin, five-set thriller over Wakefield-Marenisco 25-14, 25-23, 12-25, 22-25, and 17-15. The standing ovation seemed like a sign of appreciation of the intense emotion, hard work and all-out competition displayed by both teams. “One got a W, but nobody lost tonight,... Full story

    Sep 10, 2013

HURLEY — Hurley swept South Shore 25-19, 25-11, 27-25 Monday for its first win of the season. “I was happy with the way we served,” Hurley coach Liz Constantini said. “I thought that was much better than it’s been the first two games. But even more so, I was happy with the way we were passing and setting up with our hitters. Even though we only had 13 kills, we had a lot of good swings, a lot of good opportunities, so that’s a big improvement from last week.” The Cardinals made the Midgettes... Full story

The city took over electrical services from Xcel nine months ago. The increased cost to the average customer is about 2 cents per kilowatt hour, said Granato, and the Xcel cos... Full story

    Sep 10, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) — Battling stiff resistance in Congress, President Barack Obama conceded Monday night he might lose his fight for congressional support of a military strike against Syria, and declined to say what he would do if lawmakers reject his call to back retaliation for a chemical weapons attack last month. “I think it’s fair to say that I haven’t decided” on a next step if Congress turns its back, the president said in an NBC interview, one of six he granted during the day as part of a... Full story

  • Harbor visit prompts thoughts of all, nothing

    Sep 10, 2013

To the Editor: Crow call sharply drifts over forest wall, between the nothing and the all. All, or nothing at all. It is remindful of Aristotle’s “law of the excluded middle,” which states that everything is either “A,” or “Not A.” But Aristotle, even considering the shorter life spans of the time, must at some point have come to the realization as his philosophy matured that not everything is either black or white, but inclusive of many shades of grey between. In terms of human ability, the unseen world far outweighs the seen. Analysis usin... Full story
