    IRONWOOD - New playground equipment at Ironwood's Longyear Park is set on a soft rubber surface that prevents kids' injuries from falls. A ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday afternoon marked completion of the $60,000 project, with half that amount coming from a Michigan Department of Natural Resources grant. About a dozen children were using the new playground on a 77-degree afternoon. The former Ironwood Jaycees matched most of the DNR grant for the handicapped-accessible Super Play company...

    By KELSEY HANSEN [email protected] WAKEFIELD - The 10th annual First National Bank of Wakefield Marathon took place Saturday morning, with a record 27 individuals finishing. The 26.2 mile race around Sunday Lake began in foggy morning conditions that eventually cleared away to a perfect day for running. Hand cyclist Dean Juntunen, 55, of Mass City, negotiated 9 plus laps around the 2.8 mile route that circles Sunday Lake in 2:05:45. There were two aid/water stations spaced 1.4 miles apart....

    By TOM STANKARD [email protected] IRONWOOD — As the future of Gogebic Community College’s pool remains in the balance, some local citizens are concerned about losing an “important” community recreational facility. Located in the David G. Lindquist Student Center, the pool has been closed for repairs until further notice. GCC President Jim Lorenson told the Daily Globe in August the college board needs to determine if it’s financially advisable to spend money to keep it open. According to GCC, it costs $56,000 to $60,000...
