IRONWOOD — Jim Betchek, a former teacher and coach at Luther L. Wright High School, passed away Sept. 22 at the age of 85. Many in this area may not know or remember Betchek; he lived in Ironwood from 1956-61. But while he was here, he made quite an impression. Mostly, he left his mark in coaching high school sports such as football, basketball and track and field. And it was in basketball, where he was a head coach, that he left his biggest imprint. HURLEY — Residents of Iron County took part in the first mobile food pantry Monday at the Iron County Courthouse in Hurley. The pantry was created through a partnership between the Iron County University of Wisconsin-Extension office and Second Harvest Food Pantry, of Duluth, Minn. (AP) — Officials said nobody was at the controls of an empty commuter train that slammed into another train at a suburban Chicago station Monday, injuring dozens of commuters, but they don’t know how the train got moving. Let me ask all of you a question: “What should the city of Ironwood do if a child predator moves into the city?” Do any of you think that the city should get rid of all the children in the city in hope that the child predator will go away? HURLEY, Wis. — John L. Cattelino, 94, of Hurley, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, in Hurley. He was born Sept. 11, 1919, in Gile, son of the late Joseph and Mary (Gallo) Cattelino, and attended Gile and Montreal schools. He then worked in a CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) camp in Mercer. THOMASTON, Mich. — Gary Armedas Dalbeck, 68, a lifelong resident of Thomaston, passed away unexpectedly early Monday morning, Sept. 30, 2013. He was born on Dec. 27, 1944, at home in Thomaston, the son of Clarence and Elizabeth (Minier) Dalbeck. On May 1, 1964, Gary married Lois Jean Bailey in Ceour d’Alene, Idaho.
