  • Hurley students tour city offices, learn about local government

    HURLEY — First grade students at the Hurley K-12 School learned about local government during a field trip to city of Hurley offices Thursday. Students in Kelli Pitrone, Kathy Czarnecki and Mary Ann Kmetz’s classes traveled to the offices to learn how local government works up close.     HURLEY — October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and for Susan Wolfe, of Hurley, it’s the anniversary of a long-fought battle. Oct. 1 marked the one-year anniversary of Wolfe being cancer-free from breast cancer.   • Construction continues on airport taxiway

    IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP — A $1.85 million taxiway project began at the Gogebic-Iron County Airport on Sept. 3, but won’t be completed until next summer. Airport manager Mike Harma said completion is scheduled for July 1. The second runway at the airport has been closed for a long time, Harma said. The additional taxiway will provide safety for passengers by providing for a space for planes waiting to take off, while other planes are landing. Rather than accepting the vote as an informed decision, our school board is bogged down in a tiresome display of petty bickering, frivolous recall petitions and repackaging another doomed bond proposal.   • Blood drive nets 74 pints, support appreciated

    The American Red Cross blood drive on Sept. 25 in Ironwood received 74 pints of blood, which are now available for patients in need at approximately 3,000 hospitals in our community and across the nation. They send their sincere appreciation for everyone who supported the blood drive, especially to Anders Lyle Johnson, who received his 10-gallon donation pin.     The Mercer Lioness community blood drive was held Tuesday, Oct. 8. There were 29 registered donors. A milestone donor award was given to Opal Roberts, who earned her seven-gallon pin.     IRONWOOD, Mich. — Carlyne Faye Jarvenpaa, 60, of Ironwood, died Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013. She was born Nov. 27, 1952, in Milwaukee, to William R. Dull and Annabelle Fust. Carlyne enjoyed lounging in her pool, decorating her nails and playing her $5 bingo scratch-offs. She also enjoyed spending time with friends on Saturdays and was a “mean” Yahtzee opponent.     INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Robert J. Scholar, 82, Marion, died at 2:14 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, in the Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. He was born April 29, 1931, in Ramsay, Mich., to the late Frederic and Bessie (Cilek) Scholar. He married Martha Jane Baker on June 2, 1956. She survives. Robert was a graduate of A.D.
