    IRONWOOD — The Memorial Day weekend offered a glimpse of a city emerging from a pandemic and excited to be open again in time for the summer, according to members of the Ironwood Economic Development Corporation at their Thursday meeting.     BESSEMER - There was a senior among seniors at the A.D. Johnston High School commencement exercise this past Friday in Bessemer. Bessemer Area School District presented an honorary diploma to Charles Tirpik, a Bessemer resident who forwent the remainder of his senior year of high school in 1967 to enlist in the U.S. Army.     WOODHAVEN, Mich. - David J. Eplett, age 94, died Dec. 15, 2020, at the Applewood Nursing Home in Woodhaven. Dave was born Aug. 7, 1926, in Ironwood to Henry and Jane (Anderson) Eplett. He graduated from Luther L. Wright High School and went directly into the U.S. Navy to serve in World War II, for which he was very proud. When he returned home, he met and married his "Honey" Marian Gregory. She survives. After the iron ore mines closed, he held numerous jobs, then attended night school to learn... Full story

    IRONWOOD, Mich. - Earl R. "Smudge" Swetkovich, 97, of Pence, Wisconsin, passed away on Sunday, May 30, 2021, just short of his 98th birthday at the Aspirus Ironwood Hospital. Earl was born the son of Peter and Pauline (Reinero) Swetkovich on June 23, 1923, in Pence. He attended Pence schools. Earl was united in marriage to Verona Kaseno on Sept. 10, 1949, at the former St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Pence.
