  • Midgets rush past Spring Valley

    Jason Juno|Oct 26, 2013

HURLEY — Hurley found the best way to stop Spring Valley's offense in the second half: Keep it off the field. And Mark Saari cemented his piece in Hurley history during a 10-minute, second-half drive that kept the Midgets in control of the game. The No. 2 seeded Midgets' potent rushing attack — 65 carries for 443 yards — proved to be too much for the No. 7 Cardinals as Hurley won the WIAA Division 6 Level 1 playoff game 26-21 Friday. "Playoff football, you've got to be able to stop the run a...

  • Playoffs!

    Pat Krause|Oct 26, 2013

IRONWOOD — Many high school football teams in Michigan measure a successful regular season by whether or not they make the MHSAA playoffs. The Gogebic Miners qualified for the Division 8 football playoffs on a cold Friday night by defeating Ironwood, 35-16, in their regular-season finale at Longyear Field. It was the second straight year Gogebic finished with a 6-3 record and earned a playoff berth. Coach Mark Mazzon said he could not recall the last time a team he coached from Bessemer or B...

  • Little blue ambulance

    Ralph Ansami|Oct 26, 2013

BESSEMER — Tires on Gogebic County’s new snow ambulances may soon be converted to skis. Gogebic County Emergency Management Coordinator Jim Loeper on Wednesday unveiled one of the two new ambulances outside the sheriff's department following a county board meeting. The little blue ambulances, which look like small electric-powered cars, have no motors, but include hitches and may be towed by snowmobiles or all-terrain vehicles. Loeper told county board members every Upper Peninsula county wil...

  • Vote 'no' on Headlee override

    Oct 26, 2013

To the Editor: To the citizens of Bessemer, I urge you to vote against the override of the Headlee Amendment. The Headlee Amendment was passed in 1979 by a vote of the citizens of the entire state of Michigan to provide some control over what had been, up to that point, the runaway imposition of increased property taxes. The amendment mandated that as a municipality grew in property values, a formula was used to decrease the millage that the municipality could impose on its citizens, thereby maintaining at least some control on the amount of...

  • Consolidation best for economy

    Oct 26, 2013

To the Editor: I believe the letter to the editor by Mike Korpela (Oct. 12) regarding school consolidation is extremely relevant to the continuation of quality education in western Gogebic County. I believe further investigation is necessary by the Bessemer and Wakefield-Marenisco school districts. As a former resident of East Grand Rapids, I believe the state has had, as recent as this past year, a special fund of $5 million to assist various schools in consolidation transitions. There really is no reason for the boards of education to not...
