  • Former riding students assist at Passuello's benefit dinner

    KIMBALL, Wis. - Friends of Doreen (Martinson) Passuello raised funds for her on Saturday afternoon with a spaghetti meal, raffles and music. People from across the Gogebic Range and farther turned out for the benefit dinner that generated funds for Doreen, who was diagnosed with leukemia, requiring treatments at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.   • Anglers enjoy free fishing over weekend in Wisconsin

    Thousands of anglers took advantage of Wisconsin's third annual winter free fishing weekend Saturday and Sunday. Ice shacks and snowmobiles dotted the Gile Flowage on Saturday morning, where temperatures in the mid-20s were welcome, but a stiff south wind wasn't. There was some slush on the flowage on top of a solid ice base.   • Frozen Chozen has another successful year

    HURLEY-It was the 22nd annual Frozen Chozen elementary basketball tournament this past weekend at the Hurley K-12 School. Local elementary basketball teams comprised of third, fourth, and fifth graders were invited to play in the tournament. Of the boys and girls teams invited, a total of 26 teams competed over the two-day tournament. The tournament has been hosted by the Hurley High School boys and girls basketball teams and the Midget Booster Club for the past 22 years. It is a great fundraise... Full story

    PENCE, Wis. - Judy A. Valenti, 55, of Pence, died unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015, at home. The former Judy Rice was born Jan. 18, 1959, in Ironwood, Mich., daughter of the late Rollin and Toni (Peterson) Rice of Upson, and graduated from J.E. Murphy High School in Hurley in 1977. She attended Gogebic Community College and received an associate's degree in medical transcription, then moved to Milwaukee, where she was employed as a nurse's aide.
