BESSEMER - August "Butch" Semmerling was elected mayor of Bessemer at Monday's city council reorganizational meeting, having garnered the most votes Nov. 5 at 271 and receiving an unanimous vote from the council. Semmerling said, "I'd like to thank everyone for supporting me in this election." The Nov. 5 election drew a poor 22 percent turnout in Bessemer, with 375 votes cast. ONTONAGON - Ontonagon Village Manager Joe Erickson informed the council Monday that he has looked into the various insurance plans for village employees but still has questions on what plans would be closest to the plans presently in effect for union members. The village was notified last month that its union plan does not comply with all the requirements of the Affordable Care Act. "Bob" Johnson, 77, of Tamarack Street, Ironwood, died peacefully Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, in his home, with his loving family by his side, following a courageous, nine-month battle with metastatic lung cancer. To the Editor: I read recently that all Democrats in the Michigan House and Senate have vowed not to support no fault insurance reform. I would like state Rep. Scott Dianda, D-Calumet, to explain this. On a national level, the Affordable Care Act is now law, which: —Requires every person to carry health insurance. —Eliminates pre-existing conditions. —Eliminates annual caps to health insurance policies. —Eliminates lifetime caps of any kind. —In addition, there are tax credits given to low-income households to ensure everyone can afford th... To the Editor: It is with a saddened heart that the Hurley America Legion must bid farewell to our home since 1928. Although the Legion has had a long history with the facilities, poor economic times, declining membership and recent poor turnout of bowling leagues have dealt the final blows to our institutional face. We will still be active, just without a permanent home. I hope the Iron County Memorial Building Renovation Committee has much better luck than did we.
