  • Many disabled veterans eligible for tax exemptions

    BESSEMER — About 72 disabled veterans in Gogebic County are newly eligible for property tax exemptions on their homesteads, John Frello, service officer for the Gogebic County Council of Veterans Affairs said. The veterans must appear before their municipality’s board of review in December to apply the new exemption to the 2013 tax year. Michigan Gov.     BESSEMER - Mr. and Mrs. Claus made an appearance at the annual holiday event held by the Knights of Columbus and the Daughters of Isabella in Bessemer Sunday morning. The Knights of Columbus and the Daughters of Isabella held a joint pancake breakfast and bake sale/silent auction at the St. Sebastian School.     MERCER, Wis. - Santa arrived with a tray of cookies and mingled with partygoers at the senior Christmas party held by the Mercer Lioness Club on Sunday.     MARQUETTE - Eighth graders from Ontonagon Area Schools visited Marquette for the school's annual field trip to the Michigan Iron Industry Museum and Shiras Planeterium on Nov. 13. At the museum, education director Barry James introduced students to the location with a short talk about life on the Iron Range.     GURNEY- Santa came early this year to Gurney. Santa's arrival was announced not by jingle bells, but by the sound of the fire siren, and the kids got in line to tell him their dearest wishes and answer the question, "have you been naughty or nice?" He was born Jan. 16, 1933, on the family farm in Kimball, Wis., son of the late Guy and Rose (Vittone) Pertile. Bill attended St. Mary's Grade School.
