    SAXON, Wis. — Arnold Kero, of Saxon, was 7 years old in September of 1944 when he arrived home from school to hear the worst news any kid could imagine. His father, Emil, was plowing a clearing that has since grown over with trees at the Kero homestead on Niemi Road, near the Saxon Flowage. Emil Kero got down off the tractor and told Arnie his older brother, William, 23, was one of 48 American soldiers who had been killed while fighting the Germans over control of bridges in Holland.   • Luther L. Wright School named as one of 'America's Best High Schools in 2013'

    IRONWOOD — Luther L. Wright School in Ironwood has been named as one of "America’s Best High Schools in 2013," according to the U.S. News and World Report. According to middle and high school principal Michelle Kanipes, she found out LLW had received a bronze award in July. "It was really some wonderful news in light of all the negative information surrounding public education in middle-high schools in Michigan," Kanipes said.     FOND DU LAC, Wis. — June C. Saari; 86, of Elkhorn, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at Harbor Haven Health & Rehabilitation Center Fond du Lac. She was born June 20, 1927, in Saxon, the daughter of the late Arthur and Anna Marie (Ylitalo) DuCharme. She was united in marriage to Russell M. Saari on Oct. 3, 1953 in Ironwood, Mich. He died Jan. 1, 2002. June was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who enjoyed working in her yard, especially her flower garden. Her favorite thing to do was to shop.   • Firefighters make progress battling California wildfire

(AP) — Firefighters continued to make progress overnight battling Southern California’s latest destructive wildfire, which burned 26 homes and threatened more than 500 others in the San Jacinto Mountains. Riverside County fire department’s Jeff La Russo said full containment of the more than 30-square-mile blaze is expected Monday.     HURLEY — When runners turned back onto Wisconsin 77, off County E near Iron Belt, Wis., it looked like the 45th Paavo Nurmi Marathon might have a tight race.
