    ESCANABA — The Painesdale-Jeffers Jets shot their way past the competition at the boys’ Division 3 U.P. Golf Finals Thursday at the Escanaba Country Club. They were led by Stephen Butina, who shot an 80. The team’s highest score was just an 88, and they shot a combined 333 overall. “Anytime you win the U.P. title, you are happy,” said Jeffers coach Jason Koski. “It’s a tough course with a lot of elevated greens, but we were consistent and that’s why we were able to win.     LA CROSSE, Wis. — Hurley's Mark Saari may not have a favorable seed at the WIAA Division 3 state meet, but he didn't have a high seed during the last two sectionals either — and he advanced to state both times. Saari is competing in the 300-meter state preliminary hurdles race at La Crosse today at around noon. He's seeded 16th with eight runners advancing to Saturday's final.   • Marty's Goldenaires 'thrill' crowd at town celebration

    To the Editor: The town of Woodruff, Wis., just celebrated on Saturday its 125-year anniversary with many appropriate activities. Among them was a beautiful parade commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Million Penny Parade. It was a reminder of Dr. Kate Newcomb (a local doctor) and teacher Otto Burich, who inspired students to think about the concept of a “million” of something. They came up with a million pennies, which flowed into Woodruff from all over the United States and were responsible for the start of a local hospital in her... Full story

    BEMIDJI, Minn. — On Mother’s day weekend, Jill Halberg, an artist from Bessemer, traveled to Salolampi Finnish Language Village in Bemidji to present a gift of five coats of arms she painted at her daughter, Dana Halberg’s, request. The coats of arms adorn the five cabins of the village. The Halberg family enjoyed a Finnish luncheon before presenting the gift to John “Jussi” Hanson, member of Salolampi’s board of directors.     IRONWOOD — A class of 20 future firefighters, cheerleaders and astronauts graduated kindergarten Thursday at Sleight Elementary School in Ironwood. Niki McRae’s kindergarten class held its ceremony. Michelle Trier’s Sleight kindergarten class will graduate Monday at 1:30 p.m., while Angela Berglund’s kindergarten class graduates Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., both at the school.   • Ontonagon students learn about logging history

    ONTONAGON — Tom Pestka gave Ontonagon Area Elementary School children a glimpse of the lumberjacks and camps of the past at the school recently. Pestka, 70, said he was born in a lumber camp near Ontonagon and worked in the woods for better than 50 years. He said his father, Felix, built 19 camps around the Ontonagon County area.
