Iron County lakes to be tested for water quality

HURLEY -- Lakes in Iron County will be tested for water quality this summer, if the land and conservation department is able to obtain grant funding.

The county board on Tuesday authorized the land and water conservation department to submit an application to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for a $2,000 grant to purchase water quality equipment.

Funds from the Lake Management Planning Grant Program will also be used to educate students on how use of the lakes and their watershed affects water quality and natural lake ecosystem, according to Iron County Conservationist Mary Jo Gingras.

Good idea. I worked as a limnologist for the Ottawa N.F. in the early 1970's and we did similar work on lakes of the Ottawa. Extensive work was done on lakes within the Sylvania Recreation Area near Watersmeet. Historically much work has been done on lakes in northern Wisconsin, so much good data already exists to help in your comparitive work. We found that conductivity, Secchi disc depths and lake mean depth were critical to how lakes would withstand various recreational pressures to include impacts on fisheries. The "morphometric index" of Ryder is useful, as well, as is lake watershed areas and land use. Seasonal variability of lake water quality is another factor. Good luck in your work. Is education the main goal of your grant?
