Xcel Energy seeks permit for $70 million project

ASHLAND, Wis. -- Xcel Energy has filed an application with the Wisconsin Public Service Commission to convert the Ashland Bay Front Power Plant into a biomass-fired electrical generation facility.

It's the latest step in Xcel's plans to install gasification technology at the plant.

In 2008, the company announced a planned $70 million project in Ashland that would make Bay Front the largest biomass-fueled plant in the Midwest.
