Wisconsin's deer-gun hunt has turned to younger blood this year.
When the season opened on Saturday, 9,592 10- and 11-year-olds headed out to the woods under the state's new hunting youth mentorship program, according to the Department of Natural Resources.
The program is aimed at getting more youngsters interested in hunting, while allowing them to get out in the woods with their guardians.
More than 79,000 youth hunters under age 18 were participating in the hunt, representing 13 percent of the total number.
There were mixed reports from the 626,404 hunters who hit the woods.
