Although winter does not officially arrive for 11 more days, the Gogebic Range and surrounding areas got a quick reminder of what's to come when more than a foot of snow fell during the 24-hour period to this morning.
Strong winds played a big part in the weather, with snow drifting two to three feet in some areas.
Area schools were closed Wednesday and most governmental meetings called off.
The Wednesday night special meeting of the Ironwood City Commission was postponed. The Gogebic County Board of Commissioners meeting was canceled.
Classes at Gogebic Community College were dismissed at noon Wednesday, and the Mesabi at GCC basketball games were postponed.
