HURLEY -- Hurley High School students showed school spirit Monday by wearing their pajamas to school and watching a lunch time volleyball game as the school kicked off the 2008 homecoming spirit week .
A week of homecoming activities will end with the football game Friday night against Baraga. The homecoming king and queen will be crowned at the game.
Other dressup days this week include Tuesday, 80s day; Wednesday class color day, Thursday mis-match day and Friday the traditional school colors spirit day.
Lunch time activities have been planned for each day. Monday the freshman boys took on the senior boys in the first of the boys scrub volleyball matches. The seniors defeated the freshman and will now compete in the scrub volleyball championship game during Friday's lunch against the winner of the Wednesday scrub game between the sophomores and juniors.
Tuesday and Thursday the students will find out what the marshmallow floss game and Barbie search are during those lunch hours.
Also scheduled for Tuesday is the formal court presentation. The students who were voted to be on the homecoming court by the freshman through senior students and staff will introduce themselves to the rest of the student body before the lunch time activities. The students will vote for the homecoming king and queen.
The six couples that make up the 2008 homecoming court are Lydia Patritto and Alex Polkinghorne, Liz Harrington and Paul Maxinoski, Lauren Enking and John Kutz, Giana Saari and Jared Reid, Hailey Manzanares and Cody Kivisto, and Jessica Leoni and BJ Wesenberg.
Another popular competition is the money jar war. Five jars are placed along the counter of the school offices and throughout the week students and staff will fill the jars with change.
The seniors are competing with the first and fifth graders. The juniors are competing with the second and sixth graders. The sophomores are competing with the third and seventh graders. The freshman are competing with the fourth and eighth graders. The staff is getting into the spirit also and has their own jar with the pre-k and kindergarten classes. The winner of this contest is determined on Friday afternoon by the total dollar amount after all the money is counted at a local bank. Proceeds are going to a local community member who is fighting cancer.
"It's a heated competition," said junior-senior secretary Susie Leinon, though the decorated jars were virtually empty Monday afternoon.
"Wait until Friday," Leinon said. "They all wait until the last day so no one can tell who's ahead. On Friday we'll have to stand here and guard the jars and have plastic bags to fill."
The girls powder puff football games are planned for Wednesday night at Veteran's Memorial Field. The sophomore versus junior game will is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. followed by the freshman versus seniors. The championship game between the two winners will finish off the evening.
The student pep assembly will start at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at which the football team and coaches will be introduced as well as the homecoming court. The classes will compete in a spirit competition and other games and activities are planned. The homecoming parade will follow the assembly and is planned to run down Silver Street at 4 p.m.
Following the football game there will be a dance at the high school for area teens.
